HEADLINE ARCHIVE #1JANUARY 15-JUNE 5, 1999JUNE 5, 1999 "WALK THIS WAY" SEQUEL? Entertainment Weekly reported in it's June 11 issue that the seminal hit "Walk This Way", the Aerosmith song remade in 1986 by Run DMC and Aerosmith, may have a second part. The two groups are apparently planning to reunite with original producer Rick Rubin (co-founder of Def Jam) to remake an old Run DMC song. The song chosen will be based on the classic track "It's Tricky" which first appeared on the same album as the "Walk This Way" collaboration. In other Run DMC news, the new album Crown Royal will be a double CD with one disc of new songs and one of greatest hits and will be released in late summer. Special guests appearing on the album will be Method Man, Nas, Lord Finesse, rock band Sugar Ray, and a potential hookup with the Beastie Boys. Check back for the anticipated release date. ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY RATES KOOL HERC #6 In its May 28 issue Entertainment Weekly ranked Kool Herc's creation of hip hop as the #6 moment in music history. The issue focuses on the Top 100 events of all time and it did include other hip hop moments. Kool Herc's picture is included in the article which recounts the story of him spinning records at his sister's birthday party and his invention of the "break beat." It says Herc still lives in the Bronx and includes the quote, "I made something from nothing....now it's a multi-million dollar business worldwide." Other events that made the list include Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five's "The Message" at #24 and the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" at #42 and Run DMC's "Walk This Way" at #65. The issue also includes a list of 10 essential hip hop songs. Included on that list are: "The Message"- Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five and "It's Like That"/"Sucker MC's"- Run DMC APRIL 22, 1999
"THE SHOW" REUNION After nearly 15 years apart, Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick will be reuniting. Details on the project, to be released on Def Jam, are still not completely ironed out. SOHH reported that they will record one song for Rick's solo album. Other sources have said it will be a completely separate project featuring both artists. I'll add more details once they are confirmed. MARCH 18, 1999 "WALK THIS WAY" REUNION At the opening of the 1999 New York Underground Film Festival held at the House of Blues, Run DMC were joined by Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith in a performance of "Walk this Way". Most people remember that song as one of the breakthrough recordings in hip hop during the mid 1980's. MARCH 15, 1999
MTV'S HIP HOP "WEAK" Well, if you caught any of this you know what I mean by "weak." There were two particular highlights and they occurred early in the week. On Monday, the almighty Run appeared and busted out a few rhymes for those in attendance. On Tuesday, both Grandmaster Flash and Jam Master Jay took their turns on the ones and twos. Their time was limited though as we had to watch a rather uninteresting deejay battle the rest of the time. In any case it was good to see the Old School represented. MARCH 15, 1999
SYLVIA ROBINSON SUES BLAZE Apparently the phrase "jerked many artists" is not the sentiment that Sylvia Robinson, founder of Sugar Hill Records, would like to be known for. In February 1999 issue of Blaze magazine, an article both praised her accomplishments (placing her 10th on the list of all time record execs) as well as included the above comment. Ms. Robinson has decided to sue the magazine. In the New York Daily News, Robinson said, "I didn't 'jerk' anybody. It is an untrue statement, and I don't want people believing that about me. I was always honest in my dealings with artists." MARCH 4, 1999
RUN DMC'S COMMERCIAL FOR THE GAP Although this may not be the newest news, here are the lyrics for Run DMC's tv ad for The Gap.
If you are interested in seeing the commercial or downloading it for your own use. The Gap website has it available in QuickTime format. If that ad doesn't make you wanna shop at The Gap, nothing will. MARCH 4, 1999
DEF JAM GETS NEW OWNERSHIP Russell "Rush" Simmons, older brother of Joseph "DJ Run" Simmons, has finally given up his remaining share of Def Jam records. The sale to Universal Records, reportedly worth $100 million, ends fifteen years of control by one of rap's great entrepreneurs. Def Jam was started by Russell and Rick Rubin in the early 80's and was a key player in bringing hip hop music to the heights it now enjoys. Through the years artists like LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Slick Rick, The Beastie Boys, EPMD, and more recently Method Man, DMX, Jay Z, and Redman have all appeared under the Def Jam symbol. Rush will stay on as the label's Chairman. MARCH 4, 1999
