In any case, Grandmaster Flash currently has no major US dates scheduled, but for those of you on the other side of the Atlantic, here's the good news for you. 10.23.02 - Sankey's Manchester Enjoy! HEADLINES FOR OCTOBER 13, 2002SUGAR HILL STUDIOS BURNS DOWN In a week that saw the death of Money Ray of the Cold Crush Brothers, another part of hip hop legend has been taken away. Sadly, an early morning fire on Friday, October 11 destroyed the Englewood building that housed Sugar Hill Studios. The very building that was home to the early seminal hip hop recordings including "Rapper's Delight". The fire broke out around 2:00am and eventually drew over 80 firefighters to the scene. The blaze, which possibly started on the second floor, was so intense that at one point firefighters were forced to evacuate the building. Many people stood out in the rain as the building burned and watched in disbelief as this historic landmark of the hip hop culture vanished. Golden record albums, multi-platinum plaques, Slyvia Robinson's Grammy award, and the urn with husband's ashes were rescued Saturday from the building. While the original Sugar Hill recordings had been sold to Rhino in 1995, the studio was still active and new recordings that were inside are most likely lost forever. Thankfully no one was injured in the blaze. The series, entitled "Hip Kid Hop", will be aimed at ages 4-10 and will include a CD with a rap version of the story performed by the artists. And, get this, there is an instrumental track so the kids can try and rap the story alone. Doug E. Fresh's book, "Think Again" is about two kids who have different skin color and as they get to know each realize how much they have in common and form a strong friendship. The track for this story was produced by Prince Paul. In a statement Doug said: "I wrote this book because I think children are beautiful and I believe tolerance for diversity is one of the most valuable lessons you can teach a child. Kids love hip-hop music and picture books, so this is a great way to reach them about this important issue and help them have greater respect and appreciation for one another." Look for the books to come out this Fall. SLICK RICK STILL IN DEPORTATION TROUBLE He was arrested by the INS (Immigration and Naturalization Service) on June 1 after getting off a cruise ship and the legendary emcee Slick Rick is still in custody in Bradenton, Florida for deportation back to England. In a statement released this week by Rick's lawyers, a deportation hearing was held last Friday where the rapper was denied bail during his appeal after the judge cited him as a flight risk. Within the past couple of years, especially after 9/11, INS laws have become a bit more complicated. Slick Rick came to the U.S at the age of 11 on a permanent resident visa and never became a U.S citizen. In 1991, Rick was convicted of attempted murder after shooting his cousin (who was killed a couple of years later) and served four years in prison. After he was released in 1995, he won an appeal to be able to stay in the U.S. but the INS filed an appeal in 1997 where he was ordered to return to London. At this time, Rick filed appeal after appeal with hopes of staying in the U.S. but never got a notice to report for his deportation. To make it even worse, in 1996, Congress passed a law allowing the INS to deport anyone who committed a serious crime even after their sentences. In May, Slick Rick joined Tom Joyner on his Fantastic Voyage 2002, a Caribbean cruise that featured performances from Erykah Badu, Angie Stone and Earth Wind & Fire. When the boat ported back into Miami after the week long cruise, Slick Rick showed his credentials to the INS. They brought his info up and noticed that the rapper had been ordered for deportation back in 1997 and had a warrant for his arrest. The INS then arrested him on charges of deporting himself (leaving the U.S. on the cruise) and then re-entering the U.S illegally. Slick Rick and his lawyer plan to appeal the charges, but its possible that it may take three to six months before it goes in front of a judge. Since Rick was denied bond, he would be locked up for that entire time period. Rick's wife and manager, Mandy Aragones, issued a statement asking for the judge to release the rapper on bond. "All his loved ones are here in America. He should be allowed to return to his family in New York while sorting out this matter with INS." info by SOHH.COM HEADLINES FOR JUNE 24, 2002"WALK THIS WAY REUNION TOUR COMING IN THE FALL The song that signaled the end of the Old School era will be hitting concert stages again this Fall. It featured over 50 different artists and was featured on MTV and resulted in a CD and DVD release in the last few years. Rumor has that Van is busy working with Afrika Bambaataa to put together a sequel to the successful show which would celebrate 30 Years of hip hop. More as the story develops HEADLINES FOR JANUARY 13, 2002WILD STYLE MOVIE WINS LAW SUIT A judge just handed down a final decision on a lawsuit taken against Wild Style by Tracy who claimed that the movie used his name and that he was entitled to compensation. The judge crushed every argument by Tracy's attorneys and the case was thrown out. Submitted by Wild Style NewsLetter HEADLINES FOR JANUARY 2, 2002NEW SUGAR HILL ALBUM COMING SOON Recently, the Sugar Hill Gang appeared in a commercial for Coca-Cola that they were actually paid for, and in January the group will return to the studio to finish its first album of new material in 21 years. "It's not gangsta at all," Robinson said. "It's a little bit like Will Smith, a little bit Sisqó — like a 'Thong Song.' It's got a little Aersomith/Run-D.M.C. flavor. We did a remake of [Def Leppard's] 'Pour Some Sugar on Me' that's really hot. The album won't confuse people, so they'll know it's Sugar Hill Gang, but it's updated to what's happening now." The group has recorded seven of 13 songs, including a duet with LFO called "Girl I Want You," and there are plans to record a new song with 'NSYNC, whom the Sugar Hill Gang opened for during 1999 and 2000. "They want to do a record with us, and we want to do one with them, so we're getting some tracks together to submit to them," Robinson said. "Those guys are great guys." Also, the Sugar Hill Gang is trying to recruit Def Leppard to contribute to the "Pour Some Sugar on Me" cover. But that's not the most surprising development for the old-school rappers — in March they'll play what might be their strangest venue to date. "We were just with at her private party with David Gest, and David asked us to perform in March for their wedding," Robinson marveled. "He said, 'Joey, please, I'm gonna ask you, would you mind performing?' And I said, 'Are you kidding? It would be an honor.' " Needless to say, nobody from Snapple is invited, and the event will not be broadcast on Turner. Reported by Yahoo Entertainment News |
