SPYDER D IS BACK

After seeing his 2000 effort "True 'Dat", fall victim to the ill timed bankruptcy of his distributor (K-Tel), Spyder D has relaunched his artist/production career via his website at www.spydomusic.com

The new release is entitled "Gunz & Pianoz", featuring his new protégé' "Dorris Dae". "True 'Dat" did however do surprisingly well despite having it's marketing campaign eliminated, and it's lead single video for "Yes, Yes Y'all", never being released.

"It seems as if I have had to deal with unfortunate timing throughout my career. It hasn't been an easy pill to swallow, but I let God and my belief in destiny carry me through those rough times. It's all good though", Spyder relayed from his home studio.

The 2000 release "True 'Dat CD featured tracks with Doug E. Fresh, Peter Gunz, and Mista Cheeks. His new effort was penned and produced at his studio in College Park, Georgia. Also slated for release this summer is the debut of Texas songstress "Dorris Dae".

There will be special guest appearance surprises on remixes and various versions.

He is currently finishing up tracks for his upcoming album "Legendary".

"Gunz & Pianos" is about my life, past and present. It is a verbal and musical montage of what I've lived, ate and breathed over my career", says Spyder.

MELLE MEL AND CAZ JOIN JAYQUAN FOR "5 MICS"

Two Old School legends return on a new studio track.

JayQuan will release the single "5 Mics" on his own label JAH Music on May 10th 2003. The song features Grandmaster Mele Mel of the Furious 5 and Grandmaster Caz of the Cold Crush Bros. There is also a remix version featuring the previously mentioned and JayQuan's partner Devine Mekkah (Jay & Devine have a group called the First Sons).

"The song," says JayQuan, "is basically derived from the Source magazine rating system for a classic release where five mics is similar to five stars; or the highest possible rating.  Since both Mel & Caz started emceeing in the mid 70's there were no media outlets to cover Hip Hop, much less give any kind of review of material. "

JayQuan's hook says "Don't get it twisted, we had 5 Mics before the Source even existed - it's your fault if you missed it".

JayQuan continues, "This is not meant in any disrespect to the Source , but it's just giving these legends the 5 Mics that they never received.  5 Mics is not just a song it's a fufillment of prophecy ; I have had the vision of working with these brothers for 20 plus years".

JayQuan actually met Caz & Mel through the technology of the internet. JayQuan operates a pre Run - Dmc Hip Hop website called the Foundation and the right people with the right connections just happened to visit his site.

"It's funny I was looking for Van Silk (Hip Hop promoter) on the web one day - because I know that he has ties to Mel. I could not find anything on him , but the next week he emailed me after seeing my site" says JayQuan, "The planets were in line no doubt. One thing led to another and Van Silk hooked JayQuan up with Kurtis Blow , who in turn gave JayQuan the info he needed to contact Mel.  Troy L. Smith from Harlem also visited Jay's site and eventually got Jay in touch with Caz & Kool Moe Dee. Moe Dee was originally to appear on the song , but he didn't agree with some of the subject matter on one of the versions."

JayQuan has an eleven song Ep titled "Urban Legend" that drops on June 1st 2003. All versions of 5 Mics appear on the Ep as well.

For more info on JayQuan check his website www.jayquan.com.

"THE MESSAGE" ENTERS NATIONAL RECORDING REGISTRY

Last month Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five added yet another reason they will go down in history.

Their most well known song "The Message" was among the inaugural batch of fifty recordings named Monday to the National Recording Registry overseen by the Library of Congress where it will be among those designated for future preservation.

The 50 recordings cover more than a century, representing many musical genres as well as spoken word.

"This registry was not intended by Congress to be another Grammy Awards or 'best of best' list," said Librarian of Congress James Billington. "Rather, Congress created the registry to celebrate the richness and variety of our audio legacy and to underscore our responsibility to assure the long-term preservation of that legacy so that it may be appreciated and studied for generations to come."

To qualify, a recording must be "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" and at least 10 years old.

If you don't really see the significance of this distinction, check the link below for a complete list of the recordings.  "The Message" is certanly in some elite company.

NEW YORK PASSES HIP HOP HISTORY MONTH

On December 17, 2002, the New York State Senate passed the Hip Hop History Month resolution.

As a result, November is not the official month to celebrate hip hop history in the state of New York.

The resolution passed unanimously by all members of the Senate and was sponsored by Senator Pedro Espada Jr.  Afrika Bambaataa also played a role in its passage.

DMC RECORDS JMJ TRIBUTE SONG

DMC revealed at the taping of the VH1 Big in 2002 Awards that he had recorded a new song called "I'm Missing My Friend" in tribute to Jam Master Jay.

"I ain't talking about him being my DJ," DMC said of the song. "I'm talking about stuff like how he taught me to swim, [how] he used to sit and do crossword puzzles while we was hanging, a lot of stuff people didn't know about him. That's the legacy I want to leave for him."

Proceeds from the "I'm Missing My Friend" single, which DMC added is "a song for anybody who ever lost somebody," will go to Jay's family.

"I want to make sure his kids can go to college when they get 18," DMC said. "'Cause their father was a great musician."

The song will also be included on the rapper's upcoming solo album, Checks, Thugs and Rock 'n' Roll, due in 2003.

JMJ GETS NEW SHOE

Adidas is working on a Jam Master Jay sneaker it plans to issue next year. The tongue of the shoe will feature a picture of the late Run-DMC DJ, and all proceeds will go to a charity to be determined by Jay's family.
