1. “Why isn’t (fill in the name) listed on the site?”

There are two reasons why an artist isn’t listed on the site.  The first is that they simply had little or no effect on hip hop prior to 1986.  For example, groups like The Beastie Boys do not fit the criteria because they arrived too late.  The second reason someone isn’t listed is because I either have never heard of them or I simply overlooked them.  In those instances, definitely contact me with information on the artist and I’ll add them to the site.

2. “Why don’t you have songs to download?”

Simple answer here.  I love this site and I have no intention of drawing unnecessary attention to it that could cause it to be shutdown.  I tried to have the live shows available on one server and they decided to shut the entire site down for over a week until I could reestablish it somewhere else.

3. “I wanna get Grandmaster Flash on my new album, can you hook me up?”

No, I can’t.  While I have been in contact with several Old Schoolers, I am not affiliated with any of them and I’m sure they wouldn’t appreciate me giving out their contact info to just anyone.  In some cases I will pass along your information, but don’t hold your breath.

4. “I heard this song in 1983 when I was riding my bike over to my brother’s house.  I don’t know any of the lyrics except they use the word “fresh” and then talk about all the clothes they’re wearing.  I think maybe there was just one guy rapping.  Can you tell me the name of the song and where I can get it on CD?”

It’s unbelievable how much email I get that is like this.  Please post all specific questions on The Message Board.  There are people much more knowledgeable than me there that can help you out.

5.  “Who runs this site?”

My name is JohnG and I live in St. Louis, Missouri, USA.  I’ve been listening to hip hop since 1984.  I don’t proclaim to be the final word in hip hop history I’m just trying to do my part to keep the history alive and spread the word.

My real job is being the Training Director at Woodard Cleaning and Restoration.  I graduated from Rockhurst College in Kansas City, MO in 1996 with B.A. in English and received a Masters in Instructional Technologies from the University of Colorado-Denver in 2014.
