Hip Hop Legends, The Sugarhill Gang, are back in the news with two projects – one on film and one on wax.

The new documentary called I Want My Name Back

was directed by Roger Paradiso and follows the history of Wonder Mike and Master Gee’s struggle against the music industry since their seminal hit “Rapper’s Delight” dropped in 1979.  They promise new revelations and surprises about their relationship with Sugar Hill Records and Joey Robinson.

They are also finishing up their newest album that promises to flex their diverse interests and include both reggae and rock based tracks.

Syliva Robinson, one of the earliest hip hop entrepreneurs, died Thursday in New Jersey at the age of 76.

Along with her husband Joe, the couple founded Sugar Hill Records, one of the most influential early hip hop labels, and released the seminal single “Rapper’s Delight” by the Sugarhill Gang.

Prior to kicking doors down in the hip hop world, Mrs. Robinson had a singing career of her own including the single “Pillow Talk”.

Fatback was basically a funk band that recorded in the 1970′s and 80′s.

As far as this site is concerned, however, it is one track in particular that lands it a place on this site.

The track is called “King Tim III (Personality Jock)”.  It was released in 1979 and is considered by many to be the first hip hop song in history.

The song  was  released just before a certain other tune called “Rapper’s Delight“.

It appears on their 1979 album “XII”.
