As one of the old school’s finest and most well known groups, Whodini shows on this collection why they deserve that respect.
This features all of their major singles and hits from their four full length albums recorded between 1983 and 1989.
The first three songs alone are all hip hop classics and belong on any true old school fan’s shelf.
With the inclusion of their tribute to Mr. Magic, “Magic’s Wand,” produced by keyboard wizard Thomas Dolby (of “She Blinded Me With Science” fame), it is obvious that Whodini would go to different lengths to get a fresh sound even from their earliest days.
Whodini experimented with several different sounds from the stripped down drum track of “Friends” to the techno keyboard heavy “Haunted House of Rock” to electronica voiced “Five Minutes of Funk” and even the new jack swing sounding “Any Way I Gotta Swing It.”
You can’t go wrong with “I’m a Ho” with its rhythm scratch and simplistic background track.
If you don’t pick up the albums individually, this is a definite for any collection of old school hip hop. – JohnG
