Reviews

Of this group’s albums, their first is clearly their best.

Since this album was made in 1985, it is one of the last albums that define old school hip hop.  Yet this is one of the freshest of all time.

Mantronix’s use of beats, rhymes, scratching , and electronics gives it a stamp of approval from the old school genre.

The songs that truly define old school hip hop are “Bassline”, “Needle To The Groove”, “Mega-Mix”, “Hardcore Hip-Hop”, and “Fresh Is The Word”.  “Mega-Mix” blends so smoothly that you’d think it was an original song, but it is actually a mix of “Needle To The Groove” and “Fresh Is The Word”.

Of particular note is the song “Hardcore Hip-Hop”, which is a tribute to old school hip hop.  Though at this time, the concept of “old school” didn’t even exist yet, this song gives props to some of the pioneers of the genre.

If there was an album to add to your old school hip hop collection, this should be at the top of the list. Submitted by EBL
