If you love old school hip hop, few recordings will match it in regards to prominent figures and excellent songs. It catches the music in its environment- the clubs.
Most love old school recordings are bootlegged copies of copies of copies. You see where I'm going with this. Even though this was recorded after the time that rap was being released by labels, it was still a live medium. A scenario that is quite opposite from today's scene where only a few big acts can bring live and effectively move the crowd.
The MC Battle with Busy Bee (doing his famous battle routine) and Lil Rodney Cee is a superb kickoff.
Both Cold Crush and Fantastic provide admirable samples of their talents in tracks recorded at the Dixie.
Double Trouble (the Funky 4+1 offshoot) kicks it hard during their Amphitheatre performance. The CD provides a longer (and better) version of the performance that is on the video. As far as I know this is only recording of Double Trouble around today although their influence is not forgotten.
Much of the disc demonstrates the often overlooked talents of Grand Wizard Theodore and Charlie Chase on the turntables.
Don't miss the studio recorded tracks as well, but the true treasures here are the live performances.
